Buying a used electric car in West Bengal

28 October 2026

Used electric cars are still a small part of the market here, which cuts both ways for a buyer: fewer cars to choose from, but also fewer people who've been through this specific purchase and can tell you what actually goes wrong. Everything about buying a used petrol or diesel car — the fifteen-minute test drive checklist, listening for engine noise, checking the exhaust — is close to useless on an EV. A different set of checks matters instead, much like it does for a used electric scooter.

The battery is most of the value, and the hardest part to check

You cannot pop the bonnet and look at battery health the way you'd check an engine bay. What you can do: ask for the current range shown on a full charge and compare it honestly against the car's original claimed range when new — a brochure figure you can usually find online. A battery that's lost a large chunk of its original range isn't necessarily a dealbreaker, but it should move the price, and a seller who dodges the question or won't let you check the range display is telling you something.

If the dealer or seller can get the car to an authorised service centre for a battery health check before you commit, that's worth the half-day it costs far more than it seems. It's the closest thing to an engine compression test that exists for an EV, and it's the one check we'd call close to non-negotiable on anything older than three years.

Charging, realistically

Ask not just "can I charge it" but specifically where, and how long it actually takes in practice, not on paper. A home charging point needs a dedicated electrical connection most older flats and houses in Kolkata were never wired for, and getting one installed is its own small project. Public charging outside the main city is still thin on the ground, which matters a great deal if the car is for anything beyond local use. Be honest with yourself about your actual daily and weekend driving pattern before assuming charging will sort itself out.

Service network

Authorised service for most EV brands sold here is concentrated in Kolkata, with much less outside it. If you're buying in Durgapur or Siliguri, ask specifically where the nearest authorised centre is and how far a warranty repair would actually have to travel — both the car and possibly you.

Resale, which nobody can answer with confidence yet

The used EV market here doesn't have enough transaction history yet for anyone to say with real confidence what a five-year-old EV will be worth in three more years. That uncertainty is the honest price of being early, and it should factor into what you're willing to pay today, not be something you discover is a problem when you come to sell. An older petrol or diesel car carries its own version of this uncertainty too — see the 15-year question.

What doesn't need checking

No oil, no timing belt, no clutch, far fewer moving parts to go wrong mechanically. The checklist is shorter. It's just a different checklist, and the one item on it — the battery — carries more weight than everything else on a petrol car's checklist put together.
